The 18-foot, 26-ton Georgia pink marble sculpture was commissioned in 1950 by the Franciscan Fathers, Brothers, and Benefactors of the religious order that runs the church. It sits in front of a stained glass window dedicated to Mary, Queen of Peace.

Other than this window the body of the basilica-planned church is windowless, with walls lined by 10 recessed marble panels depicting the life of St. Francis.

From the Arts Inventory site:
Towering in an arch of the church's facade is a monumental Christ figure on a cross.
Sculpture: Approx. 18 x 12 x 2 ft. (26 tons).
J. Watts and two assistants cut the sculpture from marble.
