As part of the shrine to a local Buddhist saint, the entrance way to the stupa (the shrine), and the areas around, contain 1080 bells. This number represents the number of Buddhist sites in the province (or the town, I could not ascertain which) of Surin. These bells are designed to be struck by visitors to the stupa, and when more than a few are struck the sound is very loud.

These bells, as with all those I have seen in Thailand, do not have a tongue, but are rung by striking the side of the bell. This produces a different sound from a 'western' bell. The sound is deeper and lasts longer.
