John and Rosina Mishler came to the United States from Switzerland in 1882. They moved to Smithville Ohio in 1887. John, who was a weaver, built a mill to produce rugs and carpets on a hand-operated loom. Around 1915, the weaving mill became the first business in Smithville to be operated by electricity. The same 7½ HP Westinghouse motor is still being used. The mill was moved to its present location in 1930 by John's son Daniel. When in full operation, the mill produced dish clothes, dish towels, bath towels, wash clothes and rug rags. Cheese cloth and press cloth offered by the Mishlers were the mainstays of the business in later years.
The Mishler Mill was purchased by the Smithville Community Historical Society in 1993. Presently dish clothes, rag rugs, place mats, table runners, dish towels and press cloth yardage are made at and sold at the mill.
The Mishler Weaving Mill is open to visitors on Wednesday afternoons 1:30 to 4:00 year round and during special events.
