Driving down the causeway along the Chesapeake Bay after entering Point Lookout State Park in Scotland, MD, an interpretative sign on the left stands at the location of a past popular vacation resort. It reads in part:
The grassy area in front of you was once the site of a major resort. The geared wheels peeking out of the grass are all that remain. They were part of a power plant that provided lighting for the resort's buildings and power for its water treatment plant.
Old photographs depicted on the sign show a grand old building 3 stories high that sat on the beach with a wraparound porch. A water tower stood in back.
By 1989, severe shore erosion and deterioration of the hotel caused it to be torn down. The gears mark the spot and are the only evidence this beachfront hotel ever existed.
