Scappoose is a city in Columbia County, Oregon. The name "Scappoose" is of Chinook origin, and refers to "gravelly plain" which used to exist on one shore of the nearby Suavie Island. The Willamette River is not what it was 200 years ago, and the gravelly plain is no longer visible.
The population was 4,976 at the 2000 census. The city has a total area of 2.5 square miles all of it land.
Dairies, farming, and logging played an important role in the early years of Scappoose's history. In the more recent past, several factories existed in the community and provided jobs. The town was home to a shoe factory, two candle factories, and a Steinfeld's Sauerkraut factory. The area still has gravel mines, the West Coast Shoe factory and the Sauerkraut Festival. Scappoose is also the home of Oregon Aero; however, most of the residents of Scappoose commute to jobs in the city of Portland.
As of the census of 2000, the racial makeup of the city was 94% White, 1% Native American and 5% other races. The median income for a family was $55,616.
Scappoose has one highway (U.S. Route 30), one railway (Northern Pacific) and three airports: (1) Scappoose Industrial Airpark, (2) Chinook Ultralight Airpark, and (3) Grabhorn's Airport.
Notable residents include Derek Anderson, NFL quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.
