The small Tongaporutu cemetery sits on a hilltop overlooking the Tongaporutu rivermouth, the Three Sisters, the White Cliffs and in the distance the snow capped peak of Mt Egmont (Mt Taranaki) across the Tasman Sea. With the wild surf rolling in and the sun setting over the horizon, this has to be the closest place to heaven!
Access: Through the gate at the end of Pilot Road. Please ensure gate is closed properly.
Number of graves: Approx. 50.
There are some historic early settler graves here, and quite a few as a result of drownings in the Tongaporutu River below.
