Vanuatu Post has designated this post box on the rim of an active volcano, Mt Yasur, as an official postal outlet and mail is collected regularly by appointed postal agents.

Volcano Post at Mt Yasur on Tanna Island is open daily. Postcards for Tanna must be bought in Port Vila or at the White Grass Airport.

Mt.Yasur, one of Vanuatu's most popular tourist attractions, is estimated to erupt 10-20 times every hour and the volcano is constantly rumbling and causing the ground to shake. Getting there is part of the adventure, bouncing around the bumpy, steep road, seatbelt-less (they are not legally required), in a 4WD ute on the remote and rugged Tanna Island, a 45-minute flight south from Efate, the Vanuatu mainland.

Vanuatu now has two "extreme" post boxes with the help of Kiwi ingenuity, one is underwater and the other on a live volcano. Both come courtesy of New Zealand Post, contracted to run Vanuatu's postal service, with mail from each collected and postmarked.

Co-ords may vary slightly as the Volcano Post Box is moved occasionally due to eruptions. The box has melted more than once! But you'll find it, you can't miss it!

Type of documentation of superlative status: The ONLY Post Mailing Box on an active volcano, Tanna Is, Vanuatu.

Location of coordinates: Near the rim of Mt Yasur.
