Cheesequake State Park is a unique and educational place to visit. This park consists of 1,569 acres and offers trails, camping, hiking, fishing, boating, canoing, picnicking and swimming. The park straddles the edge of the "urban north and the suburban south" as well as two distinct ecosystem zones.
The name "Cheesequake" comes from the Lenape Indian word "Cheseh-oh-ke", meaning "upland" or "upland village". Situated at the head of the Cheesequake River, which access the Atlantic Ocean directly, evidence can be found in the park of the importance of the area when ships were the main mode of transport.
The park consists of a small piece of the Atlantic coastal pine barrens, an isolated section of the much larger Pine Barrens found in southern New Jersey. The lowlands along the mouth of the creek consist of freshwater and saltwater marshes and a tidal estuary. Vistors can walk interpretive trails that make the tranistion from these lowlands to hills of of Northeastern hardwood forest and a white cedarswamp.
Smokey sits at the entrance on Gordon Road, just before reaching the gatehouse entrance.
