York's Evangelical United Brethren congregation was affiliated with York College. The 1926 building was designed to accommodate college functions like graduation and convocations, as well as serve the worship needs of the congregation.
With the merger of the Methodist and United Brethren denominations, and the sale of York College to a group affiliated with the Churches of Christ in the mid-1950's, the congregation eventually dwindled to the point they could no longer afford utilities and pay a pastor.
The East Avenue Methodist congregation disbanded, and in 2007 the building was purchased by the Bethel Lutheran Church congregation affiliated with the Nebraska Lutheran High School in Waco, NE.
