Stupa Luang-Phu Dule Athulo—Surin, Thailand. - Buddhist Temples and Public Shrines on Waymarking.com

The above title translates as:
'Stupa' — building housing remains.
'Luang-Phu' — venerable monk
'Dule Athulo' — first and family name

The 'Phanom Swai forest park' is a major public park in the Surin province of north eastern Thailand. (The word 'swai' is a Cambodian word which translates into English as 'mango'—indicating the possibility that the mountain was once covered with mangos.) The park offers a number of activities: walking trails, cooking facilities, natural sites, and a dozen or so Buddhist sites. I decided to waymark only the two most significant of these.

One of these two is the Stupa for the remains of the Buddhist saint Luang-Phu Duln Athulo. This is a new looking structure, well designed and constructed. It is conical in shape and light brown in colour. The central feature is a statue of the saint. Around the stupa are 1080 bells, which visitors are encouraged to ring (very loud). Apparently, each bell represents one Buddhist site in Surin (I am not sure if this is the town or the province).

The monk is still a respected figure. When I was there a bus of visitors arrived from an area just outside Bangkok, over a 300km trip, to pay their respects (and most likely, spend a day in the park before returning home).
