"To design a building that would match the mountains, would last forever, and be a showplace for all time". M.J. Connell, Fish and Game Commissioner, 1915
The bavarian style construction of the hatchery makes this one of the more distinctive hatcheries in California. Devastated by fires in 2007, the hatchery is, for the most part, operated by volunteers nowadays. The California Department of Fish and Game are slowly testing the facility to make sure it is still functional as a hatchery, but rehabilitation is proceeding at a slow pace.
Restroom facilities and a gift shop (proceeds going towards restoration work), as well as a large brood pond and fish food are also available.
