Mehitabel may very well have been among the first settlers in the sacandaga valley. The first settlers arrived in 1787 and she was born in 1805. Maybe she was the daughter of one of the first settlers in the area. When she was 3 the town of Northfield as it was known had offically changed its name to Edinburgh. She would have grown up in a town without fences. Only after the town was named did new rules come about. Boar hogs could run free but were required to be yolked otherwise the owners were fined $1.00 or had to forfeit their hog. She would have seen the thriving mills that made clothes pins, rakes, brooms, and many different woodenwares. She may have even worked in a few. She may have even went to school in the one room school house that was later the town hall and is now the town's museum. I'm sure she saw a lot of changes to the valley in her time and I'd love to be able to see through her eyes what it was like "back in the day!" Happy WMin', Swizzle & Family
