We are fortunate to have a good water supply in Scotland County from deep wells. A few years back a community was given the bad news that their water supply was contaminated with some pretty nasty carcinogens. It was reported to be caused by years of leaking fuel tanks at a now defunct truck stop. The powers that be rallied to help the residents in the area. "Water buffaloes" or water tanks from the National Guard where supplied to the area for drinking water until money could be found to extend city water lines to the area. A group benevolent politicians, local, state, and federal, pooled resources and secured funding for the extended water lines. Now all in the area are part of the county system. Over the years different phases of the water system were put in place. Now approximately 75-80% of the county residents are able to tie into the county water system. As it stands now, no one is having to use unpotable water for drinking. An added boon to the county water system was the addition of fire hydrants at appropriate distances apart for fire protection and reduced insurance rates.
