Apparently, Laguerre drove a late model sportsman, car #61. I am guessing on the American-Canadian Tour.
So far, I have not been able to come up with anything about this person, but there has to be a connection. Hope Cemetery and Thunder Road Speedbowl, an ACT track, are both in Barre, Vermont.
I'm saying this stone represents his hobby, since most ACT drivers are part-timers.
Hope Cemetery, by the way, is loaded with exceptionally elaborate tombstones (Barre is, after all, a major source of monument-quality granite and the home of Rock of Ages). Not all are occupational/hobby, just very intricate.
