Totem poles are carved to honor deceased ancestors, record history, social events, and oral tradition. They were never worshipped as religious objects.
"Raven-Fog Woman", a story totem pole designed and carved in the Tlingit style by Nathan Jackson, honors the Tongass Tlingits of this area. The raising of the pole in 1979 also marked the dedication of the Totem Heritage Center.
The legend is about the creation of salmon. After Raven and his wife quarrelled, he struck her. She left the house and when he tried to catch her, she slipped through his fingers like fog. All the smoked and dried salmon they had followed her, leaving Raven and his slaves with nothing but bullheads.
