This is one of many granite posts used to mark the "corner" points on the boundary lines between towns in Massachusetts, in this case, the Town of Topsfield and the Town of Wenham. The letters "T" (for Topsfield) and "W" (for Wenham) are inscribed on opposite sides. It is approximately eight inches square and three feet high.
This is one of four survey markers located in the
Massachusetts Audubon Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary.
The marker is located on Perkins Island in the Ipswich River (accessable only by water). It is at the canoe landing about 100 yards west of the main camping landing. About 20 feet west of the marker there is a stone wall running southwest, starting at the water's edge. There is a large tree at the water's edge and about five feet from the marker. It tends to block sight of the marker as you approach the landing.
Note that this is a
Witness Monument (WM). The actual town line corner is an unmarked point in the middle of the Ipswich River, 50 feet from the stone marker, bearing 50° 58' true.
From here the town line follows the center of the Ipswich River downstream to the next adjacent marker,
Hamilton-Topsfield-Wenham WM (H-T-W WM), about a half mile.
The next adjacent marker heading southwest is
Topsfield-Wenham 2 (T-W2), 468 feet.
