The citizens of Laurinburg are indeed fortunate to have such a fine fire department. The department is composed of paid operators and volunteer firefighters. While the chief is a volunteer himself, he reports to the city manager as the lead official for city government. The firefighters are divided into two companies and alternate calls each month for rural responses. Both companies respond to calls inside the city limits. Each company has a Captain and a Lieutenant that oversee their company under direction of the chief and assistant chief. Recent purchase of Ladder 1, a 100 ft platform truck, has increased the department's ability to respond to high level fires and emergencies. In addition to responsibility for fire protection in the city limits, this department handles the fire protection for two areas outside the city limits, essentially an area just north of Laurinburg and an area south of Laurinburg. With a mutual aid system with surrounding departments for manpower and tanker service, personnel and water to fight the fires is more abundant. This coupled with a new county wide water system that reaches most areas of the county means water is readily available for firefighters. Stationed at both Laurinburg stations are Scotland County Rescue Squad equipment trucks ready to respond to traffic accidents, industrial accidents and other calls for assistance. Behind the station is a training area that has a two story smoke house with movable walls for use by all the county departments.
