The current Klindt Bookstore (315 2nd St.) ocuppies a building built between 1870 and has been used as a bookstore since 1883 according to the history sign on the building. Below the history sign is a brass sign marking the 1894 Columbia River Flood level.
The “Great Flood of 1894” was the highest-recorded flood along the Columbia during recorded history. Precipitation was heavy during the winter of 1893-94 resulting in a heavy snowpack which melted rapidly during a warm spring. At The Dalles the measured peak flow was 1,230,000 cubic feet per second on June 6. The annual average flow at The Dalles is 191,400 cubic feet per second. The normal river elevation at The Dalles behind the Bonneville Dam is about 74 feet, during the 1894 flood the river reached an elevation of just over 106 feet.
