Lining up exactly with the Cross of Sacrifice on the opposite side of Sir Edwin Smith Avenue, this garden has a large anchor as it's centrepiece.
At the far end of the gardens is a headstone that had previously marked the site of the grave of Phineas Phillip Davies in the Cheltenham cemetery for 100 years.
The headstone was claimed by the RAN in December 1986 and was installed as the centrepiece of the South Australian Naval Memorial Garden at the HMAS Encounter until the gardens were relocated to
its present location.
Phineas Davis was an able seaman on the HCMS Protector. He tragically died on 28 December 1885 at the Glenelg commemoration ceremony as a result of a premature explosion of a cartridge during a firing salute.
