One of symbol of Pyrénées mountains is a beautiful Iris latifolia (English Iris or Iris des Pyrénées) - endemic flower species of Pyrénées, which covers alpine meadows in summer (June - July).
We found this beutiful flower growing in several localities in Pyrénées, but large meadows above Gavarnie (altitude ca 1550 m) were really best of them, filled by countless flowering great blue irises... Access to the location is not so big problem, park car in Gavarnie and climb the hill north of the village - here is good road, but be prepare for steep ascent from 1350 to 1550 m in 1 km...
Iris latifolia is species of humid alpine meadows in Pyrénées mountains (South West of France). It was known before as Iris xiphioides. About 45cm high, it’s a bulbous iris. You can find it above 1000 m altitude. Usually in important groups, they begin to grow under the snow, so that they flower very quickly after the snow is gone.
