The Shinagawa Station, first opened in 1872, is the first train station opened South of the main Tokyo station. It connects the Japan Railroad's Central and East lines as well as the Keikyu Main Line.

Of particular note, this station is on the JR East Yamanote Line. This railroad runs a ring around Tokyo, connecting to most of the major train stations and subway lines, including the Tokyo, Shibuya, Shinjuku and Ikebukuro stations. This is one of the busiest rail lines in the world, carrying 3.5 million passengers a day. All 26 subway and train lines in New York City carry 5 million.
