Perry County was established in 1827 from portions of Jackson and Randolph counties. The county is named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry of the United States Navy, who won distinction as Commander of the fleet in the battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812. The county seat is located in Pinckneyville named for Charles Coatesworth Pinckney, a Revolutionary War hero.
The courthouse was originally built circa 1850 with additions in 1879 and 1939. Its current appearance and facade is the result of the 1939 addition and renovation.
