This cemetery was created in 1872 when Mr. T.R. Cherry deeded a tract of land to the city of Greenville, NC for a civic cemetery. This cemetery incorporates older church cemeteries which were adjacent to Mr. Cherry's tract of land. It is now closed for burials (with the possible exception of a few individuals who own plots). There are many interesting grave markers - many angel statues, for example. In addition there is a small memorial to a group of Confederate soldiers as well as a memorial to a Confederate general. Also of interest is the African American section of the cemetery, set aside in Mr. Cherry's original deed. Like many city cemeteries in the United States in the mid-19th centuries this was a segregated cemetery. You can find more information at the Pitt County Genealogical Researchers Online site:

The cemetery is well worth a visit if you are in the area. The variety of monuments, stately old trees including magnolia, and gravel/grass paths provide a tranquil surrounding.
