This station was constructed in 1961 by the Southern Railway to replace a station in downtown Charlotte that has since been demolished.

In 1979, Amtrak took over control of the station. Three Amtrak trains are served, two originating in New York City: the Southern Crescent and the Carolinian. The Piedmont serves Raleigh.
