Everyday, each soldier received his daily rations consisting of 18 ounces of bread

The oven would be stacked with wood and then burned until turned to coals. Afterwards the coals would be removed. The bricks would retain the heat of 550 to 580 degrees, enough to bake the loaves of bread.
