Massac County was established in 1843 from portions of Pope and Johnson Counties. The county is named after Fort Massac, a corruption of a French surname, Massiac.
The current courthouse was built in 1942, replacing an earlier courthouse on the same site which had been built in 1862. The courthouse is most known now for the 15-foot superman statue which stands next to it.
