The Thomas and Company Cannery was built in 1917 and provided a much-needed local market for the agricultural produce grown in rural Montgomery County. The Cannery remained in operation until 1963 when a fire damaged the buildings. The Cannery supplied the war effort during both World Wars I and II, and was the largest employer in Gaithersburg for many years. The building saw various uses after the closing of the Cannery, but then lay empty until its recent restoration.
Gaithersburg has grown up around the old Cannery to a city of nearly 60,000 people with biotechnology and information technology as the primary businesses now in the area.
