This Salvation Army Center for Worship and Service truely "walks the walk!" On August 13, 2004 Hurricane Charley roared through Charlotte County Florida leaving the surrounding communities without water or power and many people homeless. This "barracks" was left without a roof and the worship center was demolished. I was working at a local hospital at the time, and worked through the storm. After my day was over I threaded my way through the rubble to reconnect with my family. Thankfully everyone was alright and we had only minor damage to our home. The following morning I was scheduled to be back at work to assist in the evacuation of the facility. It was about 0630 and I found myself again picking my way through what was left of our area. There on the side of US 41 in the heart of Port Charlotte were relief trucks and trailers from this Service Center. They were out there handing out necessities and preparing hot breakfasts for our devastated community in spite of their own losses. Talk about a leap of faith! It was a truely moving experience! To this day my husband and I can't pass a kettle without putting something in, and he will frequently find the store manager and thank him or her for allowing the SA to have kettles at their business. Thankfully this "barracks" has been rebuilt and this Worship and Service Center just dedicated it's new building on Easter.
