Near the center of town in New Ulm is a park-like plaza that features the town's elaborate Glockenspiel. A Minnesota Historical Marker tells the Glockenspiel's story, and benches and this Peace Pole complete the setting.
The pole is 4-sided and includes the familiar phrase in English, French, German, and Lakota Sioux. German and Sioux are particularly important: New Ulm was settled by Germans and was the site of a famous battle in 1862, when the Lakota Sioux launched attacks throughout the area in an attempt to stop encroachment on their territory.
The pole was placed in 2004 in recognition of the town's 150th anniversary. It was a gift of the New Ulm United Church of Christ.
