The Raleigh Historic Commission website bears this description:

"Alpheus Jones built the house that bears his name in 1847 on 680 acres of land given him by his father, Seth Jones, in 1842. The house is a handsome, unpretentious, representative Greek Revival plantation house with consistent Greek Revival details. In the 1970s the house served as a restaurant, but is once again a private residence."

The home currently is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Anderson. I spoke with Mrs. Anderson on March 23, 2009. She indicated that the land surrounding the house is being developed into a mix of business and residential uses. For several years, it was anticipated that the acre on which the house sits would be sold to the commercial developer, at a price which would pay for moving the house to a new location.

Due to the present economic situation, this does not seem likely, so the Anderson's are in the process of having repairs made to the wooden structure, along with repainting the exterior.

The home sits on the east side of US-401, just north of the I-540 interchange. For decades, a giant statue of a man stood next door, at the entrance to Bradshaw Gravel and Sand Company. (The Big Man has been relocated to Capital Blvd and Gresham Lake Road.)

There is a NCGS benchmark (EZ2516) on the grounds of the house. It is just inside the drip line, on the north side of a giant Holly tree.

The structure is sometimes referred to as "The Seth Jones House".
