On April 22, 1966 Ardmore was the site of the worst plane crash in Oklahoma history, which killed 83 people. The crash occured about 1.5 miles NE of Ardmore Air Park.

"The aircraft crashed into foothills during landing attempt at Ardmore Municipal Airport . Incapacitation of the captain with a heart attack during final stages of approach. The captain, who suffered from a long standing heart condition and diabetes, managed to keep his pilot license by falsifying his medical records."
