This church structure for the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth is literally in the center of the city. The stark white steeple is an easily visible landmark. The church has had, among its members over time that include William Whipple, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, John Langdon, a signer of the U.S. Constitution, and Daniel Webster, a U.S. Senator.
The church building was built in 1855 on the site of an older structure dating back to 1712. The stained glass windows and organ were installed in 1890.
The church supports several local and international charities, including:
- Seacoast Food Pantry
- Salvation Army Soup Kitchen
- Heifer Project
- Habitats for Humanity.
The church community is part of the United Church of Christ, which includes several church organizations.
In 2006, the church membership held a fundraising effort and raised $1.5 million that funded work to restore the steeple.
