This park is special because it preserves a mile of swimming beach on a warm, south-facing bay, with a charming beach town backdrop. It is available for day use, plus there are hundreds of campsites for tents and RVs (but camping usually requires advance reservation). There is a daily fee for parking inside the park, but access is always free for pedestrians and bicyclists - so visitors may wish to park in Carpinteria and walk into the park.

Background:
"The Spanish named the area Carpinteria because the Chumash tribe, which lived in the area, had a large seagoing canoe-building enterprise, or "carpentry shop" there, because of naturally-occurring surface tar which was used to seal the boats.
Seals and sea lions can be seen in the area December through May, as well as an occasional gray whale. Tidepools contain starfish, sea anemones, crabs, snails, octopi and sea urchins."
