Cainhoe is a manor of Clophill once with a Motte & Bailey castle to the north of this house. There are earthwork remains on Castle Hill nearby.

The impressive house is a medieval one and was once in possession of the d'Aubigny family, passed to the Lacys and the Nortons, and then to the Greys and Earls of Kent, who owned the manor and castle.
