Before 1940 Urk was an isle in the former Zuiderzee. In the winter sometimes the isle was surrounded by ice, so they couldn't get the necessary foods, mail and fuel by boat.
If the need was high a couple of brave 'Urkers' with an Iceboat (IJsvlet in Dutch), especially prepared for this goal, attempt to reach the mainland. In remembrance of this 'brave Urkers' they have erected this art work.
Toen Urk nog een eiland was gebeurde het wel eens dat het eiland geïsoleerd raakte door ijsgang. Dan moest de ijsvlet worden ingezet.
