At the corner of 11th Ave and 58th St there is a boulder with a metal plaque affixed marking the spot of the first free school outside of New England in the Union. It was placed by the DAR.

The marker reads:
"This boulder is placed by the Kenosha Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to mark the site of the first free school outside of New England in the Union. It was opened June 18, 1845."
