The Man of Kent, located on a lonely stretch of Rt. 7 in the village of Hoosick Falls, NY, has been a welcoming local institution for nearly 20 years. Owner John Stoate, himself a man of Kent, purchased the former roadhouse in the mid-1980s and transformed it into what regulars and newcomers alike agree is one of the finest English-style taverns this side of the Pond.

Two things you'll notice immediately upon arriving at this intriguing place (after passing the traditional hand-painted sign and carefully tended flowerbeds out front) are the owner's warm greeting and the eclectic décor. John makes a special effort to acknowledge patrons as they walk in, an attentive hospitality that sets the tone for one's visit, whether settling in for a meal at one of several tables (and looked after by the efficient staff) or taking a place at the bar (where pints are often served up with friendly introductions to other customers).

The "rafters" and walls are festooned with all manner of interesting British paraphernalia, from bar towels and flags to cricket memorabilia and quirky antiquities, though the atmosphere remains light and airy with windows looking out on the forested ravine in back. An adjoining garden patio provides a very pleasant setting for meals or drinks in the warmer months, as well as an opportunity to meet one of the owner's domestic fowl or his huge pot-bellied pig (all safely behind a fence).

The Man of Kent offers the thirsty patron close to a dozen beers on tap, featuring the likes of Young's, Tetley's, Old Speckled Hen, Blue Bird, Guinness, Boddington, Newcastle and several others. Many more brands of domestic and imported beers are available by the bottle. There's a good selection of top-notch wines and spirits on hand as well.

The menu includes a well-rounded and moderately-priced assortment of salads, grilled sandwiches, entrees and homemade desserts, combining classic pub fare with popular American standards. It's a rare place where you can enjoy anything from a traditional ploughman's lunch to chicken wings, from a Thai-inspired salad to comfort food like mac-and-cheese. The tasty grilled sandwiches carry names like Middlesex, Wessex and Sussex, and the burgers are the best for miles around. Top quality ingredients are a given here, while simplicity and a lack of fuss make the outcome all the more delicious.

All this guarantees a very loyal following, and not only among local regulars and homesick expats. Situated as it is on the road to Vermont, the Man of Kent attracts seasonal customers on their way to and from their ski vacations and foliage tours, many of them returning year after year from all across the country and beyond.
