Mural artist Daniel Brewer painted two murals depicting scenes from the Civil War in Cass County. The first was dedicated Feb. 23, 2008. It depicts the Kansas Jayhawkers raiding the Harrisonville Square in July , 1861.
My Civil War information:
The border area between Kansas and Missouri was the spark that touched off the Civil War. The question of whether Kansas would be a "free state" or a "slave state" caused guerrilla raids on both sides before and during the war. "Free state" or "Jayhawkers" - so called for the red leggings they wore to protect their boots - raided Missouri as depicted in this mural. Other towns on the border area in Missouri, such as Osceola, also were raided. "Slave stae" or "Bushwackers" - so called for the sound their pants made in the tall brush, made raids into Kansas. Most famous was the raid of Lawrence, Kansas by William Quantrill in August, 1863.
