"Le Notti di Cabiria" is a classic Fellini movie about a prostitute life. In one long section, the main character travels to a church near Rome that is the destination of weekly pilgrimage, and in the church she thanks the Madonna for the opportunity of a better life.

Just as when the movie was filmed in the late 1950's, the church and shrine are still today filled with visitors and pilgrims. Adorning the interior walls are objects left by pilgrims as an expression of thanks. The most famous of these objects are the earphones of the radio operator on the airship Italia, that crashed on the ice floes of the Artic Ocean in its attempt to reach the North Pole. Eventually the survivors were found thanks to a radio signal sent by the radio man that was able to repair the broken radio.
