Christian Island and Fort Sainte Marie II on the south shore of Georgian Bay, Ontario, are now settled by the Ojibway Beausoleil First Nation. In 1649 however the hastily constructed fort was refuge to the Huron Wendat after the Iroquois had levelled the Jesuit Mission at Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons at nearby Midland. A year of privation on Christian Island ensued and the Jesuits were compelled to lead the survivors amongst their native allies, no more than a few hundred, into exile to the heart of New France. To this day descendants of the Huron Wendat live in Lorette on the outskirts of Quebec City. The Dispersal of the Huron Wendat from Huronia in Central Ontario is commemorated at Wendake, Quebec, as an event of national historic significance. The Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada federal plaque on Christian Island was erected in 1923.
