Across from the Royal Mint on Sussex Drive in Ottawa are a pair of vertical declining dials on adjacent sides of the south corner of the Motherhouse for Sisters of Charity of Ottawa. The Sisters are a branch of the Grey Nuns that did so much in pioneering communities in Canada Mother. The dials were designed and painted by Fr. Jean-François Allard, OMI in 1851. There are only a couple surviving historical corner dials in North America. This is the oldest.
The large dial facing south ~52º west is about 7x8 feet and the narrower dial facing south ~32ºis approximately 7x4 feet. The dials are of gray plaster with black painted iron gnomons.
A recent analysis deminstrated that the dials are mathematically correct for the location and orientantion.
