The A66 dual carriageway has separated the two villages permanently. They were connected by a ford across the beck, later by a bridge.

St Michael's was started as a Norman church with the nave built in 1150. Although there was a structure on this site before. Unusually the nave has a sloping floor. Rather than level the rock its built on the builders just stepped it. Since then additions over the centuries have expanded the church's capacity. Most of the fabric is 16th century, built under the direction of Thomas Blenkinsop of Helbeck, 1513, when the tower was built. Sandstone and a local form of limestone have been used.
