Text of the plaque:

"Wallenberg lives!
Raoul Wallenberg's mission of
mercy on behalf of the United States
behind enemy lines during World War II
was unprecedented in the history of mankind.

He is responsible for saving 100,000 lives, proving
that one man can make a difference.

He was a shining light in a dark and depraved world, and
with his mission of mercy, redeemed the reputation of humanity.

Annette Lantos"

excerpts from a 2004 letter by US Congressman Tom Lantos, the only Holocaust survivor to ever serve in the US Congress:

"... as millions were annihilated by Hitler, Raoul Wallenberg courageously defied the Nazi reign of terror during the years of World War II. As the Holocaust raged on while the War gradually came to an end, Hitler charged through Hungary to attack one of the last remaining Jewish populations in Europe.

My wife Annette and I, both Hungarian born, were in the land of our origin when Hitler’s forces ruthlessly and mindlessly tore through the country. Without the aid of Raoul Wallenberg, his "schutzpasses" and his safe houses, we would not be here today to join in the celebration of Raoul Wallenberg's birthday.

A hero unjustly punished and disappeared for illustrating the power of one to make a difference. May we never forget his work and may we never forget his sacrifice."

The memorial is placed here because Tom Lantos represented Menlo Park in Congress. Mr. Lantos died in 2008. Since the plaque names only his wife, Annette Lantos, perhaps she placed it after his death. Raoul Wallenberg, if he were still alive, would have been 96.
