The Mellow Memorial Methodist Church was founded in 1857 as the First Methodist Episcopal Church South. The first services were held in a small Presbyterian. A small church was built in 1857 at the location of this church building and the church became known as the Haven Street Church. The congregation outgrew the small church quickly however before plans could be completed for a new building the church membership dwindled due to schism in the congregation during the Civil War. After the war the church became involve in missionary work with coal miners in nearby mines. The small church was demolished in 1903 to make way for the construction of the present church was was dedicated March 13, 1904. The church was renamed Mellow Memorial Methodist Church in 1941, in honor of the founder of the Liberty Foundry.
