Tri-Cities Regional Airport was originally opened on November 5, 1937 as McKellar Field, dedicated for Senator Kenneth McKellar, an ardent supporter of aviation in the State of Tennessee who supplied federal funding through Works Progress Administration (WPA). The airport is jointly owned and managed by a commission representing the "Tri-Cities" of Bristol, Johnson City, and Kingsport plus Sullivan County. There is a statue of McKellar at the airport.

This trend toward senatorial largess continues as the area has the Quillen School of Medicine based on another long-time congressman pulling federal funding.
