Ancient Sand Dunes - Arches National Park, Moab, Utah - Places of Geologic Significance on Waymarking.com

Over the past 200 million years, sands blown in from the northwest made this area a huge desert. Over time, the layers of sand were compressed and turned into quartz and the Navajo Sandstone that makes up most of the intricate rock formations in the area.

Erosion has since washed away the covering layers, exposing the petrified dunes.

It was worth stopping at this small overlook.
