On April Fool's Day 1946 a tsunami hit this area. Twenty-three school children and three adults were killed. After the tragedy, the town was moved to higher ground and the spot was turned into a park with a monument. The area is very beautiful, but the surf is extremely rough. Absolutley no swimming is allowed.
