This life sized statue of William Shakespeare is over the entrance of the Great Hall, the centrepiece building of the University of Birmingham. The University also has a Shakespeare Institute.

The statue was created by the Sculptor Alfred Pegram. It is one of nine statues over the entrance the others of which are Beethoven, Virgil, Michelangelo, Plato, Newton, Watt, Faraday and Darwin. The statues are representing Art, Philosophy, Science and Industry, these nine life-size statues were intended to 'bear relation to the function of the University at large.'
The statues are arranged in groups of three, each figure standing within a canopied niche and either carrying an attribute or poised to indicate each chosen discipline. The statues are remarkable only in that they were carved in situ, as indicated by the lines of jointure of each figure, comprised of five blocks of stone, continued from the facade. The statues were not included in the original sketch of the facade of 1902.
The Shakespeare Institute based in Stratford on Avon, is also part of Birmingham University.
