Dewey Bridge acted as the only Colorado River crossing on Route 128 until a new bridge was built in 1988. It was an engineering accomplishment and was vital for commercial transportation in the early 20th century.

The Grand County Historical Preservation Commission refurbished the bridge in 2000, making it a part of the Kokopelli bike trail. In 1984, the bridge was designated a historic structure by the National Register of Historic Places.

Then, on April 6th, 2008 a 7 year old boy playing with matches at a nearby campground, started a brush fire, which spread for ten miles, engulfing the white planks of the newly refurbished bridge.
