This carousel was built in August, 1911 by the master-carver Charles Looff. There are 73 horses here, plus two chariots. Although some of the horses have been too worn to repair, they have been replaced as necessary with authentic Looff horses from other (closed) amusement parks. This carousel is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Music is provided alternately by the 342-pipe Ruth and Sonde organ, Wurlitzer 165 band organ, or the slightly smaller Wurlitzer 145, all housed in the carousel pavilion.
This carousel is in the center of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Admission to the Beach Boardwalk itself is free, not including any rides. The Beach Boardwalk sells season passes, all-day ride wristbands, and also individual ride tickets. If using ride tickets, the Carousel costs $3.00.
